Non Invasive Pre-Natal Testing (NIPT) (with or without scan) from 10 weeks
(20-30 minute appointment) £430 – with scan
£395 for blood test only
NIPT is not currently available on the NHS but results from recent studies suggest that it should be offered to all women in the near future.
Although NIPT for Down's syndrome is not diagnostic (i.e. does not tell you for certain if your baby is affected, it has a detection rate of over 99%. So it is currently the most sensitive screening test for Down's syndrome, it can also look for Edwards' and Patau's syndrome.
There are a number of NIPT tests available privately – Diagnostic Healthcare use Genesis Genetics UK Ltd as they are a UK based laboratory and the turnaround of Serenity for results is just a 3-5 days.
Our prices include a dating scan as well as the blood test we can also offer just the blood test if you prefer, the choice is yours.
NIPT can be performed from 10 weeks of pregnancy. Any earlier in the pregnancy and it is difficult to collect enough cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) from the blood sample. Competitor NIPT tests available require a higher amount of cffDNA to run the lab assay, but Serenity is proven to be far superior in detecting cffDNA at lower detection levels. Serenity test failure rate is less than 0.1% compared to the main competition which fail 3% of samples. Women who are significantly overweight are more likely to be in this 3%.
If the first blood test does not contain enough cffDNA – we will repeat the test at no extra charge.
If the result is reported as ‘no aneuploidy detected’ which is similar to ‘low risk’ this means you can be 99.9% sure your baby is not likely to be affected. It is extremely unlikely that the baby has any of the conditions tested. If the test result given is ‘aneupoloidy detected’ or ‘suspected’ which is similar to 'high risk' or ‘likely to be affected’ you will need to discuss this with your midwife or Consultant and decide if you wish to have an invasive test such as CVS or amniocentesis to give a definite diagnosis. It is important to realise that in this case the CVS or amniocentesis will most often confirm that your baby has Down's syndrome.
NIPT for other conditions
As well as testing for Down’s, Edward’s and Patau’s syndrome, the Genesis Serenity test can look for other conditions (there is an extra cost for this service) – the Genesis website gives lots of information regarding this and also offers genetic counselling to help navigate interpretation of results. ARC – Antenatal Results and Choices website gives unbiased information and also has a helpline should you get an ‘abnormal’ result.
