Fetal Wellbeing scan – 23 – 40 weeks gestation
(20-30 minute appointment) £95 Single, £110 Multiple pregnancy
These baby scans can be performed any time but are usually performed after 23 weeks. For the majority of pregnancies the last scan arranged by the NHS is around 20 weeks and for many parents, it just seems too long to wait until the baby is born to see it again. This is why our growth scan is so popular – it gives you the chance to see how your baby is growing and the reassurance that the blood flow in the cord and the amount of amniotic fluid is within normal ranges. Some conditions do not appear until later in pregnancy and again, a scan further on in pregnancy can provide valuable reassurance.
The wellbeing scan does not replace the Detailed Anatomy scan but is an excellent way of confirming that your baby is progressing normally.
What do we look at?
The baby scan is performed using traditional 2D imaging. During the scan your sonographer will make a number of measurements and observations of your baby including:
• Baby´s heartbeat
• Your baby´s stomach, bladder and kidneys
• Measurements of your baby´s head, thigh bone and abdomen – from this we can give you an estimation of your baby’s weight (although we cannot tell you what baby will weigh at birth)
• The amount of amniotic fluid around your baby
• The position of the placenta
• The blood flow in the umbilical artery using Doppler
The sonographer will explain the scan to you and answer any questions you may have. The vast majority of scans are normal but this is a diagnostic examination so you will be made aware of any concerns the sonographer may have about the pregnancy or your baby´s development. You will receive a Pregnancy Progress Report of the scan and some printed images to keep.
