Female Pelvic Ultrasound
Ovarian Screening. Uterine Screening.
Ovarian cancer is the 7th most common cancer in women and approximately 1 in 70 women will develop it. It is not known what the exact cause of cancer of the ovaries is but family history and your age can increase the risk. It is more common in women over the age of 60 and is less likely in younger women and those who have had at least one child. Infertility and infertility treatment, starting a family later in life or HRT treatment also appear to increase the risk although research continues as to what that increased risk is. Symptoms include a change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss/gain, abnormal vaginal bleeding, pain on intercourse and abdominal pain. Some patients may also complain of a feeling of pressure in and around the pelvis.
Cancer of the uterus is the fifth most common cancer in women in the UK. Obesity, diabetes and HRT seem to increase the risk of developing cancer of the uterus. The most common symptoms are irregular bleeding, abnormal vaginal discharge, pain on intercourse or urination and general pelvic pain. Both these conditions can be very effectively screened for using ultrasound.
Our examination is a detailed examination of the pelvic organs including the uterus, ovaries and endometrium. Other common complaints that can be confirmed by ultrasound are fibroids, ovarian cysts, and polycystic ovaries. It is also possible to check the position of a contraceptive coil. A pelvic examination is usually required before a course of IVF treatment and also to determine the likely time of ovulation. The scan can be performed trans-abdominally (externally) but it is often necessary to scan trans-vaginally (internally).
Half hour appointment: £110
Renal Tract Ultrasound

Upper Abdomen Ultrasound
Including Aortic Aneurysm Screening.
Approximately 1 in 20 people in the UK (over the age of 65) will develop an aortic aneurysm and it is more common in men than women. The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body and an aneurysm occurs when the wall weakens and a bulge occurs (an aneurysm). This area is weakened and can rupture often resulting in death. Aortic aneurysms are most often caused by atherosclerosis which is the collection of plaque on the vessel wall and high blood pressure. In most cases there are no symptoms and if found early enough they can usually be treated by surgery.
Our upper abdominal scan is a detailed examination of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen and kidneys. We will also look at the abdominal aorta for evidence of aneurysm.
Half hour appointment: £135

Testes Ultrasound
Testicular screening.
Testicular cancer occurs in approximately 1 in 1000 men and is most common in young men between the ages of 16 and 40 but can occur in all age groups. Symptoms are usually a swelling or lump in or on the testicle which is often painless.
Most testicular lumps are not cancerous and simple cysts are fairly common but we would recommend regular self examination and if in doubt a consultation with your GP. Ladies. Men are notorious for ignoring symptoms or simply not noticing them and most testicular abnormalities are noticed by wives or partners first, if you do, tell him and make him see his doctor!
This examination will screen the testes for any abnormality.(also includes a scan of the kidneys)
